About castration and sterilization
What is "Castration" and "Sterilization"?
"Castration" is an operation to remove the sex glands in animals.
After castration, animals are not only incapable of reproducing offspring, but also stop undesirable manifestations of sexual behavior (aggression in males), tagging of territory disappears, signs of estrus in females disappear due to the inability to produce sex hormones.
"Sterilization" is a surgical operation, as a result of which an animal is deprived of the ability to procreate while maintaining the production of sex hormones. During this operation, the sex glands are not removed, but the vas deferens in males or fallopian tubes in females are ligated, or their partial removal is carried out, which excludes conception. After sterilization, unlike castration, the production of sex hormones and sexual instincts are preserved.
Thus, castration is recommended to correct the behavior of animals.
Advantages of castration:
- Neutered animals are less distracted by sexual instincts. They may pay more attention to you and your family members.
- Neutered animals are less prone to vagrancy and injury in the process of finding their "half". (Cats smell the female at a very long distance).
- Neutered animals are much less likely to enter into fights, that is, they are less susceptible to the risk of injury (and, consequently, the owner is spared the need to pay large veterinary bills).
- Castration of animals, contrary to popular belief, DOES NOT LEAD TO OBESITY AND LAZINESS! On the contrary, after the operation, the metabolism of animals changes, they require less food and spend more time playing games. Such an animal reduces the owner's feed costs.
- Neutered animals have no sexual activity, so they will not arrange "concerts", mark the territory, dirty household items in the apartment, in addition, the risk of escape in such animals is minimal.
- In neutered animals, the risk of diseases of the reproductive organs (such as pyometra, prostate adenoma) is reduced, diseases of the mammary glands are extremely rare.
- Neutered animals, according to statistics, live longer and get sick less often. Therefore, by castration, you can increase the life expectancy of your beloved pet.
- Castration - prevention of breast and ovarian cancer of cats.
The risk to which non-neutered animals (females and males) are exposed and the problems associated with
non-neutered animals:
- They can jump out of the window and break.
- They can escape through the slightly open door to the street and die there (get hit by a car, they can be torn apart by dogs). Since animals are domestic and used to trust people, they can fall into the hands of knackers and die a long and painful death.
- If you have your own house or you take a cat to the country, then they can fight with stray cats and be infected with various diseases very often cats refuse to eat, lose weight, lose their fur, because they suffer from the absence of a cat.
- Non-neutered males are a direct and fast way to urolithiasis.
- Non-neutered males are more likely to get testicular cancer.
- Non-neutered cats are daily exhausting cat cries at home.
- Non-neutered cats are very odorous cat tags all over the apartment, including upholstered furniture, your things, shoes and things of your friends who come to visit you.
- Not neutered cats are your irritation, shouting at the animal, which, later, will lead to aggressive behavior of your pet.
Early castration of cats
The problem that I want to touch on will certainly be of interest to many. Someone takes the castration of cats for granted, well, and there are ardent opponents of such procedures.
In this article, we will not talk about the need for birth control of animals, we will leave it to volunteers and animal rights activists, that castration for animals without breeding value is a necessity, we will accept as a fact and talk about a slightly different aspect of these manipulations.
Now many cat kennels and breeders, including us, practice early castration of their kittens. That is, the naturalization operation (Neuter – neuter gender), as well as postoperative care falls on the shoulders of the owner of the nursery until the transfer of the kitten to new owners.
Early castration causes much more controversy than operations performed on an adult animal.
To begin with, let's define what is called early castration. Early castration of cats is an operation performed before the moment of puberty of the animal.
Such manipulations are shown to animals when they reach a weight of 1.5 kg, age restrictions do not play a role, however, it is not recommended to perform such operations during the change of teeth, and, consequently, from 4 to 7 months, thus, early castration of cats can be called operations performed before the age of 4 months.
It is worth analyzing, if possible, the pros and cons of early castration of cats:
- The kitten, due to its "nimble" metabolism and young age, tolerates any manipulation and anesthesia more easily.
- The rate of tissue regeneration in kittens and young animals is much higher, after two weeks the scar from the suture is tightened, and is slightly noticeable in kittens-girls, in kittens-boys after three days there are practically no traces left.
- Early neutered animals do not have hormonal surges of adolescence, their psychological development is more even, their temperament is more balanced.
- In cats neutered before the first signs of puberty, namely before the first estrus, the risk of cancer of the reproductive organs is almost 100% eliminated.
- Kittens at the age of 3-4 months rarely have problems with the genitourinary system, which means, with extremely rare exceptions, contraindications to manipulation under general anesthesia may occur.
- The owner of the cattery has more experience in caring for animals in the postoperative period, which means that the percentage of complications is reduced to zero.
- Significant savings in time, nerves and money of future owners.
- Kittens-boys are almost 100% devoid of the desire to mark the territory as adults.
- Oddly enough, it is early castrated animals that do not have obesity, this is due to the upbringing of proper gastronomic habits from early childhood, without hormonal dependence.
- Kittens grow up more affectionate and attentive to their owners, more sociable, playful, retain their childlike spontaneity until old age.
- As statistics show, castrated animals are larger than their counterparts, due to the absence of hormonal surges, when in search of a partner the animal forgets about food and sleep, gets nervous and significantly loses weight.
- The quality of life, as well as the duration of castrated animals is much higher and longer.
In addition, in many articles devoted to this topic, among the disadvantages of such an operation, it is said that with early castration, the urethra does not fully develop in boys' kittens, it is somewhat narrower, due to the lack of male hormones, BUT our modest experience and the following American scientists show that this is a MYTH! In cats before their puberty, the urethral lumen and urinary functions do not change in castrated cats at both 7 weeks and 7 months. And urolithiasis (ICD) depends primarily on feeding, which has been proven by several scientific works. It makes no sense to expect when the animal reaches 6-8 months of age for castration/sterilization, because when you sterilize kittens at an early age, you get more important benefits.
